The wine and vineyards

Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera, Dolcetto are the famous reds of Piemonte. But there are fine whites too, Gavi, Arneis and sparkling Asti. Many vineyards welcome visitors for cellar tours and wine tasting. We can arrange appointments for you. And we are certain you will want to buy at the vineyard. We can help arrange shipment back to your home.  For those who want to taste many wines, but without the hassle of driving to different vineyards, there are many excellent Enotecas which serve many local wines from different vineyards. And always with some snacks.  

The beaches

The Riviera de Ponente runs from Genoa to the French border at Menton. Famous beaches are San Remo, Finale Ligure and Ventimiglia. These are the beaches to relax and enjoy the scene with your own sun lounger and umbrella. There are always cafes and restaurants and promenade walks. The mountainous coastline from Savona to Genoa has many small fishing villages and beaches and can be easily reached via the autostrada. But if the weather turns poor both cities are an excellent destination offering chic shops, art galleries and museums and  restaurants and bars.

The food

Piemonte is home to the slow cooking movement and is rightly famous for its range of food, from bread sticks (grassini) to the white truffle (tartufo bianco). There are many local trattoria and restaurants in the villages and countryside close to the villa. They all serve quality local food and wine at reasonable prices. There are more fancy and upmarket restaurants, some Michelin starred, within an hours drive from the house. A must is a sea food dinner near the harbour at Savona and there are excellent restaurants along the coast. If you wish a break from cooking but not want to leave the villa, we can arrange a local epicurean to prepare and cook a meal for you at the villa. The dishes are made with seasonal local produce and served with selected wines. This is very reasonable working out about 20 Euro per person and covers 4 courses including a dolce (desert). Please advise of any allergies when booking. The markets are a wonderful way to see and taste the food of Piemonte. Most villages have a weekly market and they are colourful and friendly affairs. The best butcher and best pizza restaurant in the valley are in Saliceto, only 2km away.

Down the hill

Sometimes you need to leave the villa,

the pool, the spa and sunbed behind,

even if it is just for a little shopping. But

outside the gates and down the hill lie

the sights and attractions of Piemonte

and Liguria.

Here is a short list of what is beyond the

gates of the house on the hill.

Buy fresh bread and milk from Monica. The local shop sells almost everything you’ll need and just 1 km away.    Saliceto is the local village, 2km, with cafes, a fantastic pizza restaurant, supermarket and the best butcher in the valley. This is a must for meat eaters and is a perfect introduction to rural Piemonte and the meat is the finest quality. Millesimo (10km) is a large local town with markets, cafes, restaurants, fascinating local shops, an ancient footbridge and castle and a wonderful ice cream parlour. There are lots of nearby hill towns with unique and fascinating histories.  fantstic views to the Alps with feast days celebrated throughout the summer. A day at the beach? You choose the mood. from sophisticated and exclusive to party and easy. The cruise ships start from Savona and the town has a magnicient “shabby chic” flavour with great fish restaurants, good shops and expansive weekly market.  There are excellent beaches in Savonna but for the Riviera crowd, drive east for a few kilometres.  The vineyards of Borolo are set in beautiful valleys with pictuesque hilltop villages and towns. There are good walks from the house and  Belbo National park is only across the valley. There are mountain bike trails. But for the hardy, the Maritime alps of Cuneo A change from the rural life? Genoa is 60 minutes drive away on the autostrada. Likewise Turin is 75 minutes. Both are world class cities and well worth a visit. And up the hill? o It is a lovely walk to a little chapel at the top of the hill. On a clear day, there are views of the Alps.
